Sever’s disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is a bone condition in which the growth plate of the heel bone becomes inflamed. This condition is most common among children between the ages of 8 and 15, especially those who participate in sports that require a lot of running or jumping. The signs and symptoms of Sever’s disease include pain or tenderness in one or both heels, swelling and redness in the heel, difficulty walking, discomfort or stiffness in the heel upon waking up in the morning, discomfort when the heel is squeezed on both sides, and developing an unusual walk, such as a limp or walking on tiptoes, to avoid putting pressure on the affected heel. If your child complains of heel pain, it is recommended that you take them to a podiatrist.
Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our doctors from Kitsap Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.
Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

If you are suffering from heel pain, it could be a result of plantar fasciitis, which is the leading cause of heel pain. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the band on the bottom of the foot that connects the toes to the heel, called the plantar fascia, becomes inflamed. This commonly occurs in those who have problems with their arches, such as flat feet or overpronation. Common plantar fasciitis symptoms include pain in the bottom of the heel or the arch of the foot, pain that increases over time, pain that is worse when getting up in the morning, and swelling on the bottom of the heel. If you believe that you are suffering from plantar fasciitis, it is important to visit a podiatrist. A podiatrist will be able to provide a proper diagnosis and treatment method that may include medicine, taping/strapping, orthotics, casts, therapy, or surgery.
Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact one of our doctors from Kitsap Foot & Ankle Clinic. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

There are many people worldwide who suffer from general foot pain. This may be partially or fully alleviated when frequent foot stretches are performed. A common and painful foot condition known as plantar fasciitis typically targets the heel and arch area. It may be beneficial to roll the bottom of the foot on a tennis ball, as this can help to stretch the plantar fascia. Swelling and redness are often symptoms that accompany a bunion, and it may feel better to stretch the toes. People who have jobs that require standing for the majority of the day and experience sore feet may benefit from elevating the feet as often as possible, in addition to massaging areas of the foot that are painful. If you would like more information about the benefits of stretching the feet, please consult with a podiatrist

Stretching the Feet
Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.
It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

A bunion is a bony bump that forms along the base of the big toe. Bunions can cause pain and stiffness in the affected foot, as well as swelling. Sometimes surgery, also known as a bunionectomy, may be necessary to correct the deformity and relieve the pain. You may consider bunion surgery if you have severe pain when walking, even when you’re wearing flat comfortable shoes, or when you are unable to bend or straighten the big toe. Other reasons to consider surgery can be chronic inflammation of the big toe that doesn’t go away with rest or medicine, if the big toe becomes deformed, or if the big toe bends towards the smaller toes. A podiatrist can evaluate the severity of your bunion and determine if surgery is the correct method of treatment for you.

What Is a Bunion?
A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.
Why Do Bunions Form?
Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary
Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions
How Are Bunions Diagnosed?
Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.
